Congratulations to David for his brilliant Final Degree Project

David, a Biology student, was performing the Final Degree Project in our laboratory. He focused his research job in the toxicological study of new anticancer drugs based on ruthenium using zebrafish as animal model.

He has got an excellent mark in the Project so, congratulations David.

We wish you good luck and we hope see you again soon.

15 and 16 years old students of the Xuvenciencia program (Campus de Verán USC) visit our laboratory and our aquarium to know more about the research world

15 and 16 years old students of the Xuvenciencia program (Campus de Verán USC) visit our laboratory and our aquarium to know more about the research world
Video made by Xuvenciencia students.

Pablo and Jeannette taught them the zebrafish facility and the maintenance and handling of fishes. The students had also the opportunity to inject zebrafish embryos for xenotransplantation and to perform an acute toxicity assay.

We hope that they have enjoyed this experience and that it has served as inspiration to decide their future career.

The researchers Gema Moreno and Bruno Sainz of the Alberto Sols Biomedical Research Institute (Autonomous University of Madrid) visited our laboratory

The researchers Gema Moreno and Bruno Sainz of the Alberto Sols Biomedical Research Institute (Autonomous University of Madrid) visited our laboratory

We had the pleasure of receiving in our laboratory the visit of two great researchers of the UAM: Gema Moreno and Bruno Sainz. They taught us a lot about cancer, cancer stem cells (CSC), new interesting biomarkers and new therapeutic approaches.

Our group has been collaborating with them and this visit has been a great brainstorming to begin new experiments related with cancer biology using a zebrafish as an in vivo model.

Laura Sanchez had the great pleasure of attending as an invited speaker in the second Pint of Science that took place in Santiago de Compostela

Laura Sanchez had the great pleasure of attending as an invited speaker in the second Pint of Science that took place in Santiago de Compostela

Her speech entitled “Garrod, Santa Pola y la Edición Genética” provided the historical background that contributed greatly to the development of a revolutionary new technique of genetic edition, the CRISPR/Cas9. This technique allows you to modify the genome exactly where and how you want, easy and with a few reagents.

Our publication in the Special Issue on Zebrafish Education is now available online

‘‘A Zebra in the Water’’: Inspiring Science in Spain

Abstract

The zebrafish model can play a role in education because of its suitability for manipulation and attractiveness to students compared to traditional lecture-based instruction. Furthermore, zebrafish offer advantages over other model species. Seeing as fewer and fewer students are entering science degree programs, this project has been developed to encourage scientific vocations among secondary school students. To do so, an aquarium was given to 114 schools so that they could look after adult zebrafish, mate them, and visualize embryo development. For training on more sophisticated techniques, a virtual tool was developed to simulate a real genetics laboratory on a personal computer. Results based on teachers’ feedback indicate that the students were fully dedicated to the project and achieved better understanding of genetic concepts and techniques. These results demonstrate the potential of alternative teaching methods for engaging students in science learning.

Prof. Laura Sánchez Piñón attended to the 'American Association for Cancer Research' anual meeting in New Orleans

Proffesor Laura Sanchez Piñón attended the AACR anual meeting, that took place in Orlando on 16th of April, 2016.

She has the pleasure of meeting some of the most succesful researchers in cancer field over the world, and bring to our laboratory new ideas and projects to continue our zebrafish research.

In addition, Laura attended the congress with some of our colaborators like Bruno Sáinz, Gema Moreno and Rafael López.
